Fr. Michael Bechard’s Facebook/Twitter pages: are they appropriate for a Catholic priest?

Warning: the following post contains graphic images and vulgar/obscene language.

Fr. Micheal Bechard is a priest for the Diocese of London, Ontario. Facebook is a very public social networking site. His Facebook page contains amongst other things: the support of dissenting nuns,  nude (what some would consider homoerotic) images,  images and links that contain vulgar expletives such as “sh_t” and “assh_les”, links to youtube videos by someone known as “The Rebel Fag”, (these videos contain the image of a muscular young man; again usually known in as “homoerotic”) … On his Twitter page he has retweets containing the swear word: “fu_k”.

To conclude: is it appropriate for this same Catholic priest to be appointed and remain as director of liturgy of a diocese? Is it appropriate for this same priest to be designated by the bishop as the authority on placement of the Tabernacle? Is it appropriate for this same priest to hold public ministry?

I’d love to see how Catholic your Facebook posts are, or how Catholic your music choices are. How about your private files, private photos, private thoughts? Are those pertaining to the Catholic faith as well? Fr. Bechard has done no wrong and has not promoted anything against the Catholic faith, despite your evidence which lacks the proof you are so desperate to show. So allow me to help you turn the tables in your uptight, extreme conservative world: the Catholic church needs more people like Fr. Bechard and less boneheads like you. The idiocy that lives in your head when there’s actually someone who tries to show the good in our faith is unfathomable. Shame on you. Go get a puppy – you’re clearly a very sad person.

Well Hans. Here is a question for you: Is this blog an official representative of the Catholic church? Is the writer of the blog in a position of power and influence over Catholics in his diocese?

The actions of Fr Bechard are scandalous. He has indeed done wrong. For a Catholic priest, and someone that holds authority over such a critical element in our diocese as the liturgy, for him to post homoerotic pictures, encourage dissent among nuns, and to publicly support grave sins is tantamount to grounds for excommunication!! These are not his private files, photos, and thoughts. He made them public. There is no such thing as conservative or liberal Catholics. There are Catholics and there are heretics. If you think abortion, homosexuality, and disobedience to God are ok, then you are the latter.

I was also curious as to why you have no comments, and then I saw my comment “awaiting moderation”. That’s really amusing, and not surprising.
